TRANSMISSION REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - A/T
1986 Automatic Transmission Removal MERCEDES-BENZ
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
REMOVAL

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove transmission oil filler pipe clamp from cylinder head. Force off ball socket on control wire linkage pivot. Pull out wire lock and loosen control wire.
2. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove cross yoke center body support. Remove oil pan drain plug and drain oil from transmission. Remove drain plug from torque converter and drain. Reinstall drain plugs. Remove torque converter cover plates. Remove 6 torque converter-to-drive plate bolts.
3. Place wood block between engine oil pan and front crossmember. Disconnect exhaust pipes at coupler at rear of transmission, and remove exhaust pipes. Remove rear crossmember and rear transmission mount as an assembly. Remove cable strap and unscrew kickdown solenid valve cable. Remove impulse transmitter retaining screws and remove transmitter.
4. Remove bolts attaching transmission companion flange to drive shaft 3-arm flange. Remove exhaust shielding plate. Loosen drive shaft clamping nut and slide drive shaft as far rearward as possible. Turn neutral safety switch plug retainer ring in upward direction. Carefully remove plug with 2 screwdrivers.
5. Disconnect shift control rod from range selector lever. Unscrew holder and remove vacuum line from vacuum control unit. Disconnect oil cooler lines from transmission. Remove oil filler tube retainer bolt and push tube upward to remove.
6. Remove all engine-to-transmission attaching bolts except for 2 bottom bolts. Slightly raise transmission with transmission jack. Remove 2 bottom engine-to-transmission bolts.
7. Push transmission and jack toward rear of vehicle as far as possible. Remove transmission from vehicle.

INSTALLATION

1. To install, reverse removal procedure. When installing torque converter to transmission, coat converter tangs, turbine and stator shaft with assembly lubricant. Be sure that converter is fully seated in transmission before installing in vehicle.
2. Tighten transmission-to-engine M10 bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 N.m) and M12 bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 N.m). Tighten drive shaft clamping nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 N.m). Tighten flex plate-to-torque converter bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 N.m).
