WIPER/WASHER SYSTEM
1986 Wiper/Washer Systems MERCEDES-BENZ
DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
WINDSHIELD WIPER & WASHER SYSTEM
All models have a 2-speed wiper system with intermittent feature. The wipers are controlled by a steering column lever. As the lever knob is rotated, it operates the wipers at intermittent, low, and high speeds. Pressing the button at the end of the lever operates the washer system. The intermittent relay is mounted on the wiper motor.
REAR WINDOW WIPER & WASHER SYSTEM
Station wagon models have a rear window wiper/washer system. This system has a low speed, intermittent speed and washer. It is controlled by 3 push buttons at the top left corner of the console. Pressing the washer button operates the washer and wiper until it is released. Pressing the other buttons operates the low speed or intermittent speed until the button is pressed a second time.
HEADLAMP WIPER & WASHER SYSTEM
With the headlamps on, the headlamp wiper system is activated by the windshield wiper circuit. The headlamp wipers operate at a single speed. The washer system is activated by pedal switch, or combination switch on steering column. Pump action is controlled by a contact switch in the headlamp wiper motor. Headlamp glass is sprayed momentarily during each wiper cycle.
CAUTION: On models with Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), observe the following precautions: Before any repairs are performed, disconnect and shield battery ground. Disconnect 10-point SRS connector under passenger's foot rest. Use extreme caution when working around steering column. Models with SRS may be identified by a SRS light below tachometer.
ADJUSTMENTS
HEADLAMP WIPER SYSTEM
Servicing & Adjustments
1. Wiper arm pivot drives and drive cables should be lubricated with lithium grease. Pivot drives should move easily. Replace hard to move or frozen drives.
2. Install pivot drive securely to drive motor, prior to installation of cable drive tube and second pivot drive. Ensure motor is in park position prior to installing wiper arms.
3. Adjust wiper arm position to park wipers on lower or inside edge of headlamp. Adjust washer nozzles to spray center of headlights.
NOTE: Operation of wiper system, not secured in chassis, will produce normal movement and flexing in drive cable tubes. If binding occurs and motor is overloaded, it will be switched off by internal overload protection.
TESTING
WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR
Connect battery voltage (+) to connector pin No. 3 and ground (-) pin No. 6. Test low speed by connecting an additional positive (+) cable to pin No. 2. Test high speed by connecting cable (+) to pin No. 4. Test intermittent operation by connecting cable (+) to pin No. 5. See Fig. 1 .

HEADLAMP WIPER MOTOR
Operate motor by connecting battery current to Red wire and grounding motor case. Current draw should not exceed 4 amps. Ensure motor is in park position prior to installation of wiper arms. Operate park circuit by connecting battery current (+) to Black wire and grounding (-) motor case.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
NOTE: Mark crank arm position on motor shaft prior to disassembly.
